Chelsea continued their impressive run in the UEFA Conference League with a commanding 4-1 win against Panathinaikos at the Athens Olympic Stadium on Thursday night. This victory marks the Blues’ second win in as many matches in the tournament, placing them at the top of the league phase table.
A Tribute to George Baldock
The match was set against an emotional backdrop as Panathinaikos honored former Sheffield United defender George Baldock, who tragically passed away on October 9 at just 31 years old. Fans displayed placards with Baldock’s squad number, 32, while a version of David Bowie’s “Starman” played over the stadium’s PA system, paying homage to the beloved player.
Chelsea’s Early Struggles
Chelsea had to navigate some early challenges in the match. Goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen made a vital save, stopping a downward header from Tin Jedvaj, while Azzedine Ounahi nearly tested the Blues with a dipping shot from 20 yards. However, it was Chelsea who struck first midway through the first half.
Joao Felix Shines
Joao Felix opened the scoring for Chelsea with a well-placed goal after receiving a neat return pass from Mykhailo Mudryk. By the time the halftime whistle blew, Chelsea enjoyed a comfortable 1-0 lead.
The Blues picked up the pace after the break. Just two minutes into the second half, Mudryk doubled Chelsea’s advantage with a powerful header from a cross by Pedro Neto.
Felix then scored his second goal of the night, with a shot that deflected off Panathinaikos defender Nemanja Maksimovic, leaving goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski with no chance.
Nkunku Seals the Victory
As the match approached the hour mark, Christopher Nkunku put the result beyond doubt by converting a penalty, awarded for a handball by Daniel Mancini. Despite lasers being aimed at him from the crowd, Nkunku calmly slotted the ball home, making it 4-0 for Chelsea.
Panathinaikos managed to pull one back with a late goal from Facundo Pellistri, but it was too little, too late.
A Strong Start for Chelsea
With this victory, Chelsea has now scored four goals or more in five matches across all competitions this season. Under the guidance of manager Enzo Maresca, the Blues are showing promising form as they look to make a mark in the UEFA Conference League.
As the group stage continues, Chelsea’s impressive performance in Athens reinforces their status as serious contenders in this year’s tournament.
